Cougars roll on

IMG_2575 (2)The Bullsbrook Saints are a vastly improved side this season. In round 6 they took a literal interpretation to the Belt Up Cup and handed out a merciless 149 point hiding to the Mt Helena Lions.

With a powerful midfield combination and a strong key-forward line, the Saints have signalled they are a force to be reckoned with. Meanwhile, the Chidlow Cougars steam on unbeaten. Rolling on and over all before them.

And so the stage was set for the HFA round seven clash between the apparent new powerhouse of the competition, the Cougars and the emerging Bullsbrook Saints.

IMG_1985By half time goals were proving hard to come by. The Saints managed a meagre 1.4 (10) by the big break, but they were also making life hard for the Cougars who managed only 3 goals per quarter to post 6.9 (45) for the first half.

IMG_2164The third quarter was a more even spectacle for fans than the score suggests. Bullsbrook added 2 goals and 5 points while the Cougars were steadier in front of goal adding 4 goals and 2 points. The Saints spent equal time in attack and got more shots away, but the Cougars were more deadly when it counted.

IMG_1908The Saints looked good in the final quarter, clearing the ball effectively from the centre and doubling their tally of full pointers.

However a moment of ill discipline disrupted a plucky Saints fight back and triggered an unfortunate series of Bullsbrook brain fades that saw a Chidlow free kick (from the Saints forward pocket) converted to a sequence of 50m penalties.

Saints fans seethed as the ball was hand carried all the way to the Cougars goal line for a 6 point gift.

IMG_2108That was all the Cougars needed to get their groove back. They added 5.2 for the quarter to win biggish by 56 points.
