The West Australian Rally Championship will be decided this weekend when Chidlow hosts the final round of the WARC season, the Safari Rally.
Glen Forrest’s own 19 year old rally ace Dylan King will challenge the veteran championship leader and two time state champion Leigh Hynes for one of the highest honours in Australian motorsport.
King made heads turn from his first race. Driving on a specially arranged permit at age 16, King set stage times that signalled that he was in a league with the best of his more seasoned rivals. Driving the ‘rally classic’ rear-wheel drive Ford Escort, King thrilled fans with his skill and outright pace. By the end of his second competition year, King dominated and easily won the prestigious 2wd drive state championship.
This year King progressed to a 4WD turbo where he immediately moved to the front of the field to battle Hynes for the outright WARC crown.
Hynes leads King in the championship by 24 points and is odds-on to take his 3rd championship. Hynes must finish outside the top eight to lose his grip on the ultimate prize.
Then again, the Carrington Signs Safari Rally is considered the toughest event of the year and rally fans understand the precarious magic of the ‘gravel dance.’
In other words – anything can happen!
