The pavilion was packed and Percy Cullen Oval was encircled with spectator cars for the top of the table clash, Gidgegannup Bulldogs v Chidlow Cougars. After months of waiting – both teams, and their fans, would learn where they stood.

Light rain meant cool conditions but a slippery ball. Bulldogs scored first, but by the first change the Cougars looked in control and the Cougars 3.2 lead the Bulldogs 1.3.

The Bulldogs weren’t done yet. By half time Gidge had stemmed the Cougar flow and pushed back to take a slender 3 point advantage. The game was in the balance and becoming an arm wrestle.

By the third quarter the rain began to clear and the drying conditions set the stage for the Cougars to display some clean handling skills and improved ball movement.

The Cougars began to maintain possession, drawing their opponents to create multiple opportunities for effective forward entries. The Cougars kicked well to add 7.3 for the quarter. The bulldogs managed only 1.1 and the game was cracking open. At three quarter time it was the Cougars 14.6 (90) to the Bulldogs 8.7 (55).

Gidge and Chidlow have been demolishing all teams before them this season and both sides have been growing in confidence.  Cougars are long time losers to Gidge but coach Bill McKinlay has been busy developing a fit and evenly balanced side that shares the load with a focus on moving the ball steadily to effective scoring range. The plan was bearing fruit.

Cougar’s midfielder Stuart Smith was the umpires selection for ‘player of the match’, a deserving choice amongst observers.

Chidlow outscored Gidge 4 to 1 again in the last quarter to break away for a decisive victory. Final score Cougars 18.11 (119) def. Bulldogs 9.8 (62).

Hills footy fans will be looking forward to the rematch next month.
